Tableaux of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh are among those selected to be part of the annual Republic Day Parade down the Kartavya Path in New Delhi on January 26.

The tableau proposed by Delhi has been rejected. This was the second time in as many years that Delhi’s proposal has been rejected. The rejection was done for not meeting the laid criteria—the theme, presentation and impact, an official said.

The selection was done by an expert committee set by the Ministry of Defence with representatives of other ministries.

A Ministry of Defence official said the parade shall have 15 tabluex of states and Union Territories. These are of Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Tripura. The Union Territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli completes the list.

The official said as per the policy of rotation adopted last year, 15 states and UT’s were called in to give their proposals. The policy of rotation ensures that each state gets a chance to send a tableau once in three years.

Mizoram and Sikkim, who were part of 15 states and UT’s called to give proposal, expressed and inability to present a tableau.

The UTs of Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not appear before the expert committee tasked to select the proposals.

Thus, five vacancies have been created by rejection of Delhi and due to the reasons given by Mizoram, Sikkim, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands for their inability to present a tableau.

These vacancies were taken up by Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and West Bengal.

The MoD official dismissed any claims of favouritism towards Gujarat or Uttar Pradesh. Delhi has sent a tableau seven times in two decades. Five other states—Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Karnataka—have had more appearances in two decades, than Gujarat or Uttar Pradesh.
